We're going to go a bit simpler today, mostly because I'm cursed with illness, but also because constricting the mind too much is a terrible idea.
So let's go a little more abstract.
"Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws." - Plato
A pretty simple one here, but take some time to think about it a little more deeply.. And then let me know what you think Plato's getting at. (I'll give you a hint - It's not just that bad people are bad!)

Hrmm...
ReplyDeleteThe only way I can think of this is that good people don't have to be told what to do in order to be good. They just know that stealing is bad, or hurting someone, or insulting someone.. and they know that being polite and helpful is good.. They don't need a 'book of rules' in order to know this.
Whereas bad people know the same thing.. that stealing is bad, but will find a way to justify it.
But that's just what I think.
And then there was Nuremberg.
ReplyDeleteRules can be a help. Make life a lot simpler.
Ron from Arizona had an interesting series of blog entries on rules. Starts at http://radicaldiscipleship.blogstream.com/v1/pid/363229_Who-needs-rules.html#TP.
Agree with the way you think. Plato, also, as if Plato needs any agreement.
Thanks for the link, Si. Very interesting stuff indeed :)
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work!
